In response to the common core standards requirement to utilize complex text in my first grade classroom, I’ve put together this packet to analyze story structure and cause and effect using the exemplar text: Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin.
Day 1: Build background with a quick write and collaborative discussion about the read aloud.
Day 2: Listen to recordings of instruments reatured in the text. Re-read a short portion of the anchor text, discuss roots and suffixes. Text code an excerpt of text.
Day 3: Discuss the number words in the text, read the anchor text, text coding activity.
Day 4: Brainstorming with a You Tube clip, small group discussion, read paired differentiated, leveled text on violins.
Day 5: Review content vocabulary, main idea & salient details, complete main idea worksheet, summary mat activity, and craft. *Craft is for non-standard measurement & writing*
