Halloween Actvities

Halloween Science

I had a really great day with the kids today!  I am collaborating with one of the other teachers on my grade level, and so, sometimes–we’re like co-planners/co-teachers.  It’s really a lot of fun and I think that the kids are getting a ton out of it.

We started at around 9 this morning with a Halloween safety freebie from Miss Kindergarten Love, a teacher out of California.  It is a two page book that was really easy to put together and easy to teach with.  Click on the link under the picture to get the booklet for yourself.

Next up, we worked on some experiments from Deanna Jump’s Science Unit.  In our classes, we’ve been working on the scientific method, so we tried out her experiment with Diet Coke and Mentos…along with two experiments on spiders.  Our kids really loved them! 🙂

We took the kids outside to do the Diet Coke & Mentos experiment and I got this great shot of the result.  Check out the faces of the students!  Priceless!  I love when science surprises kids! 🙂
We went inside to complete the second part of the experiment, and the observation notes.  When we asked the kids to make a prediction as to whether or not we’d get an explosion of coke in the classroom, we had a student or two suggest that maybe we’d get soda on ourselves.  Just then, I remembered that I had a set of slickers in my closet from when I taught about Maine and lobster fishing.  (That’s a post for another day…super fun..)  Anywhoo…here are Daina and I sporting our ‘safety gear’.
One of my dear parents made some cookies for the kids and I with our names on them, and then another parent gave us all pumpkins from their cub scout troop! 🙂  We took pictures of all of our kids with the pumpkins and cookies.  I’ll be developing them this week to give to the parents as a fall gift! 🙂
All in all, it was a really great day!
