Celebrating … and other random thoughts…

August 7, 2012 by Tamara

Friends…
What a day I have had! ๐Ÿ™‚  I am celebrating lots of different things today!  First of all…I’m pretty stoked that I have my fourth follower! ๐Ÿ™‚  Hooray for Heather! ๐Ÿ™‚  I thought it was really neat of her to stop by and leave me a note.  I am really new to the blogging world…so…normally, I think if someone says something on my page…they are probably new too!  But Heather’s a big fish in the ‘blogging pond’! ๐Ÿ™‚  She’s got like a bazillion followers and stopped by to say hello to me! ๐Ÿ™‚  So…on her page…I’m like number 2249…and on my page she’s number 4…but hey!  Imma celebrate that! :0)  It made me feel special…so…I’m just going to say it! ๐Ÿ™‚
When I was on her page…I got an opportunity to read one of her most recent postings about celebrating your students.  Her tag for her page is ‘before you reach their heads, you have to reach their hearts’.  So true, and totally necessary for real learning to begin.  This tag ties in beautifully with what she was sharing from a book called ‘Conscious Discipline’ written by Dr. Becky Bailey.  Bailey says that there are seven skills that teachers need to be able to ‘transform every day discipline issues into teaching moments’. Heather’s post comes from the chapter on Encouragement. Now, I would tell you what she said about the way that we celebrate and encourage our children with verbal praise…but…she said it so well…I think you should just read about it for yourself! ๐Ÿ™‚  This is MUST READ reading for the beginning of the year.  The way we notice or encourage our students has a major impact on how they respond to us over time.  I’m going to get this book myself, but…until I can…and until you are able to yourself…Check out the link below!

I am also celebrating the sale of another item on my TPT site! ๐Ÿ™‚  Hooray for me! ๐Ÿ™‚  I’ve sold 5 copies of my Common Core Assessments for Math!  Four people even pinned it to their Pinterest! :0) This year, I’ll be using this for small group remediation progress monitoring. If you teach first grade…you might be interested in this tool for your students as well! ๐Ÿ™‚

Last but not least…I’m celebrating a dear colleague who helped me make curtains for my room! ๐Ÿ™‚  We had a total blast! ๐Ÿ™‚  I’ve never really made anything but a MESS with a sewing machine…but there I was…sewing like a champ! ๐Ÿ™‚  Check out the photos of my adventures with Karen below! ๐Ÿ™‚

So…first we started by measuring the fabric to the right length.  Then we ironed it and cut it.
Notice how all I’m doing is holding and ironing…we DID want the curtains to turn out nicely, didn’t we?? ๐Ÿ™‚
Karen was a patient teacher and encouraged me to stitch a  bit on the curtains.  I was REALLY nervous that I’d mess up! :/  Check out those faces! ๐Ÿ™

The curtains turned out amazing! ๐Ÿ™‚ We ended up having enough extra fabric for a pillow for my rocking chair! ๐Ÿ™‚  So much fun! ๐Ÿ™‚  Thank you, Karen! ๐Ÿ™‚

Love the curtains! So excited for all the celebrations! Great minds think alike because the link you sent me was one of the blogs that inspired my bird theme!
