While I agree that relationships are key, I think that it totally depends on your personality. I can honestly tell you that I am a mostly happy go lucky type personality. That does not read well with students who are used to being autonomous. You have to earn respect, and that type of personality gets crushed in a classroom before it becomes successful. You can be loving without being ‘giddy’ in the classroom and letting it get out of hand. I tell my kids I love them daily and show them in countless ways….they also had to know that Mrs. Russell is not a push over either. This is an opinion piece, and as such, the advice may not work for everyone…but it truly DID work in my case.

While I agree that consistency is key, I have found out that kids will work and respect teachers they LIKE.. Developing a relationship with students is vital, and in my opinion, the “Not smiling until Christmas” advice is not advisable! I have found the book “Teaching With Love and Logic” to be invaluable..

Thanks for the share. I will definitely be modifying for my 3rd graders. So many read books on the computer, via RazKids or Epic so they still have some sort of log generated at school and (for those who have access to the computer) home. But this is a great month to month assignment for home/school accountability.
