Arctic Fluency for Primary Learners

January 1, 2019 by Tamara

One of my favorite parts of planning is working on units. I love to tie topics across disciplines. It is important for kids to see how their learning relates the the world around them.

I wrote this fluency set for my advanced first grade readers, but it would still work for seconds or even remedial thirds. Each passage is about something related to the Arctic. Some years, I used them as fluency homework. Other years, I used it as small group reading. Still other years, it was only used for enrichment for firsties! The set is versatile!

Arctic Fluency

There are a variety of different topics in this set. I love using these as non-fiction supplements in small group, or even as whole group instruction! For example, the passage on The Importance of Sled Dogs or The Iditarod would be a great compliment to the biography of Balto. Focused on conservation? The passage on Endangered animals or Glaciers would be perfect. Focusing in on Native Americans in the Arctic? No problem! There’s a passage on the Inuit and another on Totem Poles.

Arctic Fluency

I hope you enjoy using these passages as much as my students did! There’s so much beauty and wonder in the Arctic!

Enjoy teaching this region to your learners!

If you love this set for January, you may also love my Black History Month set for February!

This fluency for first grade is differentiated!
