I know what you mean about growing as an educator. I also understand how the healthy learning environment can co-exist within tough community environment where students arrive in our classrooms with the effects of some of that toughness. I remind myself often that mixed in with those effects my students possess beautiful gifts and awarenesses that resonate with the knowledge and experiences that I share as their instrumental music teacher. I wonder if the most enduring lesson we teach all children is that lifelong learning is the secret to joy and so much more …Three years ago, I went through breast cancer diagnosis, mastectomy, reconstruction,chemo, radiation…all while continuing to teach orchestra at my two middle schools. I lost about two weeks of school time altogether, and it was not easy. Along with my family’s support and the expertise of the docs and nurses, it was my students’ progress and compassion that made that year of personal struggle one of great satisfaction. I sense that you are a recipient of a similar experience. God be with you as you continue your personal and professional journey. Your students are fortunate to have you as their guiding light.
