Common Core Aligned Math Assessments for Firsties

July 26, 2013 by Tamara

If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably know that I really love teaching math to firsties–a lot. 🙂  When most six year olds are sitting at their seats reading a book during bus dismissal, mine are asking to go to the board and write math problems for each other to solve.  Mine know that when I say, it’s time for a video, they ask me if it is one where they need to use math vocabulary. *sigh*  Yeah, we’re a nerdy bunch in my room…but…a really SMART nerdy bunch! 🙂
Although we have a fairly decent math series, I felt that that I could be a bit more pointed in my approach to teaching towards the common core.  I made a set of assessments last year, but I wanted them to be a bit more user friendly, so, I updated them and added a data binder, because I think I’m going to try my hand at student led conferences this year! 🙂
Let me tell you a little bit about what I’ve put together in this pack…

There are almost 100 pages in it.  Some of the standards I broke up into a few assessments to make sure that the students were able to work each part of it. I’m big on teaching strategies in my room to give my kids the best opportunity to try a different approach to what’s in front of them.  There’s an answer key for each assessment, and a data recording sheet for both the student and the teacher.
The Teacher’s data binder comes with a colorful cover sheet and all of the assessments listed on one page (front to back).  There are eight questions on each test.  I am separating the students’ recording sheets with alphabetical order tabs.  They were cheap at the Dollar General! 🙂  I also have a student friendly version of the data binder.  It was fun to work on for this post! 🙂  Each student will need a one inch binder that has three rings in it for holes. two sheet protectors, their cover, and their recording sheets.  I made a black and white version of their cover so that they can color it! (Hopefully, my firsties color a bit better than I do!)  I am really excited about the student fidelity aspect of this particular data binder.  I’ve prepared some incentive charts that the students can color in when they’ve completed their goal for the standard.  There is a sheet that features two students and an apple tree…and a different one with other standards that features two students and an orange tree.

I used student friendly language for the objectives of each assessment.
Depending on the class I have, some of the assessments I will probably give whole group, but most I will probably do during small group instructional time/centers.

Thanks for checking out my new pack! 🙂
