Great learning! You can really see that they grasp the concept of decomposing numbers. By the time they get to 5th (my grade) they will really be able to do mental computations pretty quickly...also the why behind the answer. Enjoyed watching.

Thanks so much for stopping by to say hello! :) So glad you liked the videos! :) We've been working on these strategies for about a week. They've been working on place value concepts with subitizing and making tens all year. So, the application of that in these videos was huge for me too. This is my first year back in first after four in third. I was so nervous about teaching this to them, but, so far...we are good! :) Over the next several days...I'll be starting subtraction strategies! :0) Wish me luck! :) I'll need it! :) *sigh*

Amazing Tamara, I'm so impressed at how the kiddos verbalize their thought process. That's BIG! I have to admit that math is my biggest struggle - I've always been an ELA kinda person. After I saw this - man, I've gotta get on it!!

Seriously...even now, when we are walking in the hallway I start to tell them about second grade and I get misty. Inevitably, one of them goes...'Oh, Mrs. Russell!' and shakes their head! LOL! :) I'm just a great big squishy softie! :)

It's tough with GO MATH. They don't give the kids enough time to really know these types of skills. I think my intermediate experience has helped me to prepare them a LITTLE bit better, because I know why they need to be able to understand these concepts later on. My lows are really struggling with the value of a digit and composing to 5 and 10. So...although I let them attempt this strategy...they use manipulatives...A TON! I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya as you wrap up the year! :)

We started the year with the same concepts, but I felt like some of my kiddos did not grasp it as well as the others. I have some super highs and super lows and I want to meet all of their needs. That is pretty awesome that you are doing these strategies with with your firsties! Thanks for sharing ;)

Thanks Kelly! :) We've talked about number decomposition all year, but for the last two weeks, I've focused on application of those things with them. It's amazing how much they can take in and DO! :) So proud of my firsties! :)
