This continents & oceans geography unit was designed for third grade students in a personalized learning unit.
Description
Personalized Learning is a method of teaching where the students have more autonomy and choice in how they learn what they learn. Students pre-test to find their just right level for learning. Then, complete mastery checks for each level through level 3, which is the fullness of the standard. Got students who already know all of the continents and oceans by name? How about deepening that instruction with a student led, research project created in a power point presentation? Let me tell you what this looked like in my room!
In my classroom, we use a mix of online and hands on resources.
For this unit, students had access to my YouTube Channel on Continents for their ‘MUST DO’ task. Their ‘CAN DO’ or choice tasks were all hands on tasks. Students could choose to work in pairs or independently.
Here’s what’s included in this pack:
1.) A Common Board Configuration (I Can Statement, Essential Question, Choice Board)
2.) Standards Deconstruction sheet – Use this to break down the important elements of the wording of the standard. Students develop their own I Can Statement after the deconstruction and then mark their own level after the pre-quiz.
3.) A Technology Connection sheet for your computer station – Directions for accessing my You Tube Channel and pictures of the videos selected at each level to increase student independence.
4.) Hands on Resources – Three homework sheets for students at Levels 0-3. Mastery Check Sheets for Levels 0 – 4. (These are the sheets where students record the answers from task cards, or the questions asked after watching the videos.)
5.) Level 4 Enrichment project – Explicit directions given for teacher, mastery check sheets, and graphic organizer included.
6.) Pre-test with answer key
**Note: I give the exact same quiz for pre and post test. You may substitute the post test for students who are doing the Level 4 enrichment project.
