This fluency pack is leveled to align with three different reading programs.
It meets the Common Core Standard for Fluency as well.
RF.2.4b Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
There are 15 passages. I’ve provided a conversion chart that is specific to the passages. I’ve lexiled each individual passage and aligned them to AR, DRA & Fountas & Pinnell. Each week, you can give your students something to read for their nightly fluency that meets their needs! 🙂
Description
On each fluency sheet, there is a grid for you or a parent to log how many words per minute the student reads, and some scaffolded comprehension questions for the students as well. The questions are rigorous and provide opportunities for the students to discuss their thinking about the text with their parents–rather than provide a yes or no answer. Each page has numbered lines for ease of grading!
Each fluency passage has both oral and written comprehension questions. The written comprehension questions include text coding and even a ‘research’ question! Students will not be able to get the answer directly from the text…they will have to seek out an additional source. I can tell you that item has been a hit with my learners!
This has been a wonderful opportunity for parents to have something tangible to do with their students nightly! In my classroom, I send this as homework, but, for those of you wanting to use it for assessment, I’ve added a student form that has no questions or numbers. 🙂
This pack was created for advanced readers in my first grade class, but, it is appropriate for seconds and remedial thirds as well. I had a handful of students who were ready for a challenge, but were not quite ready for second grade text. Using these passages, I’m able to differentiate to their needs without overwhelming them.
