Using Poetry for Fluency

July 23, 2021 by Tamara Leave a Comment

I love using poetry reading to increase student fluency and expression.

We use choral reading, echo reading, partner reading, etc to practice during our journal time.

I take about 10-15 minutes at the end of the day to go over the poem of the week before we leave for the day.

Each day, we mark the text and discuss what we’re reading.

At the end of the week, the students take their journals home.

After all that great practice, it’s easy to read aloud the poems at home!

Poetry journals build the confidence of reluctant or striving readers.

Engaging students through listening and echoing can work wonders!

I have a few poems picked out for each month. I use the ones that think will resonate with my learners the best. If you’re interested in trying this out with your learners, click on the images below and you can download my compilations.
