Chapter 2: Classrooms That Foster Word Confidence
Today’s reading was all about how to establish the kind of confidence in students that will support your efforts to have them attempt new and difficult tasks when it comes to vocabulary.
They made suggestions about how to keep students motivated in the classroom. Having a great behavior management system that fosters celebrating comaraderie and collegiality among students is a great start! Also, having a classroom that is student friendly, rather than teacher friendly will give the students the freedom to make right choices independant of intervention from the adults present in the room. I really loved how both authors fostered independance in their students with their room arrangements!
What I found most helpful in this chapter was the suggestions made about how to choose the appropriate vocabulary words for my learners.

1. Use the words from your established commercial reading program.
-I loved that they called it the ‘commercial reading program’. Folks sometimes don’t understand that these series are created for states in a generic way. It’s impossible to create a series that is individualized when you’re marketing to so many people. That’s why a basal will never be your end all be all…sorry guys…I’m passionate about that. :/
They suggest a ten day plan rather than the traditional four days of teaching and one day of assessment model that is prevalent within basal series. The kids need more time and practice with the words and content to have a depth of understanding.
Just make sure that you vaire they words based on their Tiers. ๐
2.) Choose Content Area Words
-This is most beneficial to the upper grades, but…I try to get in a content area word or two every two weeks in my first grade classroom to give students an exposure to them.
3.) Choose Tier Two Words
-Tier Two words are words that are important for understanding what they are reading. For example, I might choose the word explain as a tier two word in my first grade classroom. They are already familiar with the meaning of write, but what does it mean to explain? Well, its a specific reason for something. So, when I ask you to explain something, I mean, tell me WHY you feel a certain way. When I grade them on a rubric, we can discuss how the feel that they explained themselves within their writing.
This chapter was so good, guys! It’s one that I am going to definitely use as a planning piece when I am formatting future lessons for vocabulary instruction. If you don’t have the book yet…It is just a MUST HAVE.
Catch ya’ll later! ๐
